Unstable Laptop - random freezes after instaling SP1

Some help would be much appreciated, I probably missed something.

Symptoms :
*freezes and the last second of sound replays itself when watching streaming video (sopcast &/or hulu) - needs hard reboot
*freezes when listening to Winamp (must output some sound) - needs hard reboot
*exits from heroes III from time to time or any other game, no freeze

*it started after installing Win7 SP1, never had any problem before
*Acer laptop, Turion RM-70, Radeon 3450, Win 7 Pro, Realtek sound, Intel X25v 40GB

My debug:
*it seems to be related to the sound part (tried 2.0, 5.1, headphones)
**when the power setting is on "power saver" it does all the above
**when it's on balanced I can stream anything without stalls (though sometimes the sound/graphics stutter) - all the rest of the problems persist
*CPU stable, below 65°C, doesn't heat excessively
*seems to be related on a ramp in CPU-load when sound is being played - it happens more often on "power saver" as the CPU is capped @50% clock speed

other:
*it always asks for password upon wakeup from standby although the setting is not to ask

My guess is maybe SP1 messed up my power saving settings deep down in the OS, as at the surface all seems well - but the imposed settings don't translate in the desired behavior.

Your thoughts, where do these freezes come from and how to solve them?

Since the freeze seems to be sound related, try uninstalling the sound drivers, use CCleaner to blow out all temp files, then use CCleaner to clean up the registry. Restart into safe mode and reinstall drivers from there. See if that helps some. It could be a driver got hosed during SP1 install, or the driver just expects things to be 1 inch to the left of where SP1 put them.

It could also be video drivers causing the problem. I'd recommend the above procedure with Driver Sweeper added as the first step, then CCleaner for temp files, then CCleaner for the registry, then restart into safe mode/install new drivers. When using Driver Sweeper, make sure that ATI and Nvidia are all checked. Even if you've never had a Nvidia card in this rig before.

If that doesn't work, let me know.

I'm gonna take a look tonight, it did seem to me also the sound driver may be the culprit. It never really worked properly before a release this January, but since then all was fine.
I'll try the above and if things don't work out... maybe a OS reinstall.
