Trasfering Windows XP to Mac Running Bootcamp

So i got a iMac and im running XP via bootcamp, i previously had a XP machine and im seeking to transfer the entire hard drive from the old machine to the mac. Only ive encountered a problem.. How do i copy the files over while im running XP, wouldnt it crash if i attempt ro write over files the system is currently using?

You can't copy an operating system. well, you can, but it won't boot.
You can't copy programs, only very simple ones will run aftr being copied.

Think about it. If you could do the above, Microsoft and all the other software developers would be bankrupt in a week!

You can copy your XP data (pictures, documents, music, etc.).

Would pulling the hdd from the old machine and plugging it into a hdd caddy then into the mac then booting from that drive work?
