Phenom II x2 555 or Athlon II x3 450?

Okay here's the situation.

About a month ago I was able to upgrade to the Rana 450 Athlon II x3 core (haven't even put it in the MOBO which is an ASUS M4A77TD). I am making the assumption that the 4th core will unlock for the purpose of comparison (I realize there is a bit of luck involved). I now have an opportunity to get a Phenom II Calisto BE 555 for 89 bux on newegg.

All I plan to do is play Rift (If anyone is familiar) and maybe a few other lighter games, and sometimes record these games (fraps).

Im thinking of adding a GTX 460, and here's where the real question comes in.

Will I see a better performance out of the Phenom or the Athlon assuming both unlock to a stable 4 core and will the Athlon hold me back in terms of bottle necking the GTX 460? (I'm not really sure I understand the L3 cache can someone explain what makes it better? IE. L3 is further away and larger so its slower.)

I keep reading the Athlon II x3 450 Rana is actually a good gaming processor but you how the interwebs is.

I just want to get the best setup for what I will be doing.

Just stick with the Athlon. It won't bottleneck a 460 at all. Especially if you're just gaming

They both run at the same clock speed. So assuming they both unlock to 4 cores (not a good assumption to make btw), then the Phenom will definitely be faster.

If the Athlon stays at 3 core, and the Phenom unlocks to 3 core, the Phenom will still be faster.

If neither of them can unlock at all, then it will be a toss up. Some games can only use 2 cores (eg. SCII). Which would give the advantage to the Phenom. Some other games do support more cores, which might make the Athlon perform better.

The Phenom will be fast in test but in real world performance based on what you said you will be doing the Athlon will hold up fine and I doubt you would notice a difference. Just make sure you OC the CPU!!!
PS - It is luck, my x555 won't even boot with 4 cores and isn't stable enough to load windows with 3 cores at any voltage.
Good Luck

I got lucky with my 555 and got it to unlock to a B55 quad but to be honest i don't even need the extra power, i run my sig rig specs 24/7 no problem and nothing really keeps it back.

Good Luck

This is actually why I went with the Athlon x3 to begin with (because cores don't always unlock and or work stable.) I figured if I got the x3 at least i knew I was getting a 3 core with a possibility of a 4 core. LOL yeah im pretty sure im going to try and OC it a bit, I read in the Athlon X3 club thread some ppl are getting them up to over 4Ghz. But In all honestly Im comming from a single core OC'ed to 2.5Ghz so the 3.2 triple core will feel like a monster I'm sure.

I appreciate everyone input, you guys are always very helpful.

For gaming, you wont even need to unlock the Athlon x3.
It can handle any game if combined with a good graphics card.

isnt the athlon 450 already 3.2 ghz stock speed?
