ps3 can do 256 players and its not total choas so why cant pc?

the devs dont want to spend the time designing maps

If they've done and tested it, it could very well be a hidden ini file tweak that can unlock the capability.

PlanetSide can hold very well over 256 EASILY. Why would it be so hard to believe 256 is difficult on an engine that is 10 years more advanced on hardware that is 10 years more advanced?
Im not familiar with Planetside but in Bf2 I can fire a TOW missile and it will be seen on the other side of the map. Imagine the pc power it would take to have that transfer across a map with 256 people on it.

128 or 256 players is nice, but highly unnecessary. And besides, not everyone has the internet speeds of S. Korea.

BF3 really has my interest if it's going to have battlefields with THAT many people on it. The degree of chaos or coordination that could potentially occur would make it unbelievably awesome.

You do know that that's mostly all text data being sent, right? It's not like the server has to transmit the IMAGE and animation to everyone. It just tells everyone on the server "this guy just shot a TOW, all clients launch lines of code for TOW fire animation" and then your PC renders it. It's no different from anyone in the game firing their guns. If you get a full 64 player game and line everyone up with M249s firing nonstop, it won't cause the server to lag any worse, unless it's a horrible server of course.
