I don't think increasing player capacity would have nearly as much effect on clients as compared to the server that is keeping track of 128 clients.
clients would be put under much more stress also.

the difference in FPS between 24 players and 32 players in BC2 is pretty big, even when none of them are on screen, or nearby.

I think rather than going to 128 players, something like 96 would be much more realistic to aim for.

Depending on the map size, 128+ could become too much. But even if they don't release 64+ players, I'm sure modders will do it - I'm mainly thinking about Project Reality modding team

I couldn't agree more. But a server like that would need a pretty fast internet connection, and powerful hardware and we all know that these things arent't really cheap to rent.

Who cares about wether 128 is fun or not! It should be the server hosters choice.

This might/will sound stupid but here goes.

MAG for the PS3 ran a bunch of people on one map successfully. But it probably wasn't as have as graphics intensive as BF3 will be. The graphic on MAG was simply just ok...or less. My point is, there is a way to have a mode where you could utilize this many players on one map. Defending and taking over different objectives. And while doing so you can lend a hand to a squad that could use a sniper or something. I think this could work better conceptually on BF3 for the PC than on a console because consoles are full of kids that don't know the value of teamwork. The PC field has kids too, but not as many.
