Just what I was thinking. 256-player unranked FFA party, or maybe set up as a huge practice zone for players.

Have a game mode of attack and defend. Similar to a counter-strike style of plant and defend found on "de_" maps. Give each player 1 life per round. Should work out pretty well on large scaled maps.

BF2's Project Reality Mod hacked in 128 players

BF2 had 64 players hard-coded in, but modders still found away to get it to work. At least make modding an option, no matter how much more expensive it'll be to develop. BF has always been a PC series, and we've been making sacrifices that we shouldn't have to be.

With 256 players, you're bound to die within just a minute. Then waiting another minute to be re-spawned to get another minute of game play is hectic. You'll never be able to unlock all of your ranks and weapons.

256 players doesn't imply any particular problem.

It may be too crowded for some on some maps, but there is nothing inherently limiting about that number of people, in the sense of game play.

I've played 128 player Tribes 2, Battlefield 1942, and Battlefield 2 games. They were a blast, and doubling the players on some maps would be even more fun.

Map size is the only real limiting factor. Some maps in certain tactical shooters could comfortably support far more than 256 players, IMO. On the otherhand, some tiny maps feel crowded with 32.

I don't understand how they were able to substantially test 128 and 256 since the game was designed for 64 players so trying to test out 2 and 4 times the amount of players on the same game is clearly going to probably not be nearly as fun. The map design and size would be totally different for 128 and 256 players respectively and totally different from the ones currently designed for 64.
