Question about ram usage

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, I've got a question about my ram usage when playing games. I currently have 3GB running in 64bit Windows 7 home premium and I usually idle with few things running like skype, steam and browser around 30 to 50% usage.

My question is, whenever I open any game I am normally at 80% usage or more, is this crippling my performance? In games like Crysis Warhead I can reach up to 97% usage. I was thinking of upgrading to 6GB of Corsair Doms but don't want to screw up my overclock doing so. I am right now @ 3.6 Ghz on my I7 920 while undervolting and I have found this to be extremely stable.

1.) Should I upgrade to 6Gb and if so should I stick with Dominators or would a cheaper alternative like Gskill 1600 be sufficient?

2.) If if upgrade will I have to completely redo my overclock and have to find another stable setting?

3.) This would be my first time upgrading my ram is there anything i should know about doing so or can I stick it in and go?

Thanks for any feedback you can give. Happy Overclocking wink.gif

I would upgrade to 6GB and I would also reset the overclock and start from scratch before you install the new kit. You may BSOD right off the bat so reset to default settings. As long as you buy triple channel RAM you should be ok just install and fir it up.

80% or more whow. I think your problem is a single stick of RAM. If you had 2 sticks (even 4GB) would be much better. I only see up to 45% RAM usage.

1) Yes, add another RAM stick.
2) You might tweak your RAM overclock but your CPU settings can stay the same
3) Stick it and go. RAM is the easiest to upgrade.

He is not running one stick, he is using 3 x 1GB. He cant just add 1 more stick. OP has to either add another 3 X 1GB kit (not worth it) or get a 3 x 2GB kit for more RAM.

I would get a set that has the same specifications as the ones you have now in a 2x3 kit.
