I was thinking the same thing. This sounds alot like what microsoft did with the "new and improved" games for windows. "hey guys! sorry we haven't really payed any attention to you guys lately but here is this new, awesome DD service that we made for you because you're worth it! seriously, it will blow your mind......"
I think alot of devs are realising that the DD marketplace vastly outperforms the B&M sales data and that Steam specifically with holds sales data because they don't want anyone to know the obscene amount of money they make every year, thus removing temptation from would be competitors that could actually give them a run for their money.
There are a number of reasons why moving to a digital system instead of hard copy sales is a good idea for a company looking to maximize profits and the devs are just now figuring out that PC gaming is at the front line.
