A few questions about top perfomance

Thread Starter
Heya! I just have a few questions about top performance. I'm getting Shogun the 15th, and i want to have a top experience. I'm running the demo at the moment. It runs great in high graphic settings, but i'm still experiencing a few problems. Here is some questions:

Q 1: Does Windows Aero (i have windows 7) slow down your gaming experience?

Q 2: Does Anti-Aliasing make a BIG difference in a game? Or does it just make a little? (Cause it slows down the game a bit).

Q 3: Do i need to overclock? (I don't think so tho'. Cause i ran a test at "canyourunit.com", and i said that i should be able to run Shogun in top speed.)

My system info:

AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor 3.2GHz
ATI Radeon HD 5750 Video Card
4 GB RAM
Windows 7, 64 bit

Recommended system for Shogun 2: Total War:

2nd Generation Intel Coreâ„¢i5 processor (or greater), or AMD equivalent
2 GB RAM (XP), 4 GB RAM (Vista / Windows7)
Windows 7 / Vista / XP
AMD Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 series graphics cards or equivalent DirectX 11 compatible graphics card.

1) not really unless you have a lower end computer
2)Depends who you ask and on what game, if your monitor is big and you are playing in something like 1920 x 1200 then your eyes can do the AA.
3)Not really, it can help out performance wise but it is not like overclocking will put something from unplayable to playable.

1) Windows Aero will have a minimal impact on system resources, and likely not affect gaming much at all. If you are really worried and won't miss it, feel free to turn it off though to maximize performance.

2) AA is a visual effect, used to smooth out jaggies. Either you notice it, or you don't. Turn it down until you visually notice a difference and the game starts looking less cool to you. I haven't played shogun yet (though I should download the demo) so I can't say but many people play many games on 0xAA without complaint.

3) 5000 series runs a wide gamut, the 5750 is completely difference from the 5950 in computing power. If you want the most out of your card you need to push it to its limits. Do you need to overclock? If you visually see slowdowns, choppiness, or what have you. But be aware that overclocking rarely nets you more than 15-20% increase in performance, so it might not be enough if you see significant performance issues. Slight ones yes.

What problems are you having? large fps dips?

AA does have a pretty good performance impact. If you are running at a higher resolution such as 1980 x 1080 then 2x AA should be enough to make it look good. When you start adding lots of AA and high detailed textures, those are generally the heavy hitters for performance.

Right, thanks everyone. When playing shogun, my fps drops whenever i scroll up, while both of the armies fight. So basically, when i get an overview of the map, while it is fuilt with men everywhere. Btw, im running 1680 x 1050.
