Why buy extreme CPUs ???

Thread Starter
Can somebody explain to me why intel isnselling the extreme CPU at so much more price?
Are they crazy overclockers?
Can't you just buy a slower one and oc it?
What is so much better about it that it's 3 times the price?

You could buy an extreme and OC it.
The unlocked multiplier makes it much easier for people new to overclocking to do so. And knoxy is right on that too, they bin the "better" cpu's for extreme editions so they can usually OC higher.

Yes but will an extreme achive much more extreme clocks then the 930 for example, I just don't get where so much more money is going
it's not like the silicone is much better or anything

They have unlocked multi. Also binned,so they are sturdier and handle higher volts under extreme conditions and survive (somehow).

Don't know if they are actually worth the price, but it is what it is. You want the unlocked multi, you pay for it.
They are more versatile for overclocking, if you have a board that doesn't go over xxx bclk, no problem, up the multi instead & keep going. Or for the boards that need qpi slow mode enabled to go over a certain bclk, it will kill 3d performance.
It also opens up a lot more memory options, if you want memory at a particular speed use the ram divider & bclk to get it there, & overclock more with the multi.

For benchmarking they are very useful, less so for gaming & a lot of other stuff, but some people still like to have the best.

It's possible but I don't think extremely likely. The unlocked multi's allow much more potential for OC'ing but I think extreme cooling is required to see that full potential.

This 100%.

They give you more options and allow you to push further given sufficient cooling. For 6GHz on my 970, I need to hit 240 BCLK. You can use much lower than that with a 980X.
