Core 2 Quad Q8400 and voltage

Hey, gang. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 (stock clock is 2.66 ghz) that I currently have at a stable 3.10 ghz at what I believe to be stock voltage, since I left the voltage control on Auto on my Gigabyte motherboard. Right now, increasing the clock speed or voltage would be unwise due to my subpar CPU fan, which can only just keep the CPU under 65 C at full load at the moment.

However, I have ordered a bunch of upgrades from Newegg, including (but definitely not limited to) a Thermaltake Frio, which I believe is one of the best non-water CPU coolers around. With this, I should have little problem dropping the temps at least 15 C and giving me some room to mess with some CPU overclocking.

My question is more of an experience survey: how much did the voltage tweak on your Core 2 Quad affect your ability to raise the clock speed, and how much did the same tweak affect your temperatures? I could use as much information as you have, as the more I know the safer I feel about playing on the BIOS later this week. Thanks. tongue.gif

while CPU frequency graphic is linear, the voltage to make it bump up is exponential.

ex: 0.9V -> 3,2Ghz
1V -> 3,4Ghz
1.02V -> 3,6Ghz
1.2V -> 4.0Ghz
1.33V -> 4.2Ghz
1.47 -> 4.4Ghz

Higher voltages = higher temperatures
frequency do not affect temperature.

Wowzers. I really hope I can hit 4Ghz at 1.2V. This is a good general idea to run off of, and I appreciate that. I'm getting the Frio as soon as tomorrow night, so I'll post back with the results. Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

You better get a program to read your current voltage, like CPU-Z. I popped my Quad into my Mobo and my vcore was 1.5 at stock speed left at Auto. Auto doesn't mean stock.

You're not going anywhere near 4.0 with a Q8xxx on a G31, bro. You'll be lucky if that board sees 410 FSB.

Your only chance is something like a P45 UD3 series where you can tune the reference volts and get it to a high FSB.

Kay, so I went to go do some FSB and Vcore testing, and something odd came up...

First off, I was having a real hard time posting at anything above 3.10 Ghz with manual voltage settings. For testing purposes, I dropped the bus down to 333 Mhz on an 8x multiplier just so it would post. I ended up booting at 2.66 Ghz, 800 RAM, and a Vcore of 1.312 V (+2 RAM, etc.).

Now, when I opened up Prime95 for a quick stress test, something weird happened:

The Vcore was tuned down to 1.296! It went back up as soon as I stopped Prime95. I know I'm new to overclocking, but is that supposed to happen? What setting should I be adjusting?

The numbers above were just to show the trend (perhaps to show the amount above stock needed, but definitely not total volts). I have my whole board underwater, NB/SB + mosfets and I run 3.8@1.425v

Remember the whitepages' max voltage for these parts is 1.45 (anything more than that is pretty much considered to mean death to these 45nm chips and I wouldn't go above 1.4 unless you're well cooled and aware you may injure the chip)

Don't plan to just guess numbers until it works, some Q84's have done well OCing, others (most) don't, you need to be thorough and work your way up the FSB steps as with any OC. Don't expect 4GHz unless you go to Q9*** and realistically on air I'd look for 3.4-3.6 as your max. I don't know the board so others will be more useful in setting realistic goals based on the board.

I got to post at 1.35 Vcore and 400Mhz x 8 (FSB at 1600Mhz), but the Vcore is still being throttled by something according to CPU-Z. I've disabled pretty much every voltage-related auto function on my motherboard, so I really don't get why that's happening. At idle, the Vcore is listed as 1.312 on CPU-Z; under full load, it drops down to 1.280.

Don't trust the software voltage readings, go with BIOS. Also I'm assuming you've turned off speedstep but it should absolutely be off if it isn't already.
