That's the same thing that's happening to me. The first boot page stops right before it loads the SATA listings. Weird.

That's probably your RAM, you see the FSB: DRAM ratio on G31 boards is often set at 5:6. Which means that with 400 FSB your RAM runs at 480 (= 960). Which is beyond cheap RAM's range. Try setting the FSB: DRAM ratio to 1:1. It'll lower the stress on the RAM.

Some other advise for the Q8400. Don't go over 1.4volts on the vCore. Try raising DRAM voltage a notch, NB voltage and VTT voltage 1 or 2 notches if you can't get it stable.

Try upping the PCIe frequency to 104 or 106, don't go beyond 112. It doesn't always work but it worked on my G31. I reached 429 FSB with this little tweak. The increased NB, vCore and VTT voltages I posted above might help as well. It's best to put voltages on manual in the BIOS, since auto will just increase them beyond spec and potentially damage the hardware.

What do you mean ? You can't find a P45 board for LGA 775 ?
You guys are tempting me to put in my old Q8400 and do some testing, im quite sure i have a pretty golden Q8400 here.

I was able to reach 3.7 (464x8) with this on 1.41v. That was with air and never reached over 65c. Remember that that was also without tweaking the gtl's (was waiting for a Q9650 so just played some with it. With my Q9650 i was able to reach 4ghz on 1.33v without the gtl, now i have sorted out the gtl and is at 4.2ghz @ 1.34v. So im pretty sure that i can get close to 4ghz with my Q8400 with > 1.45v

Here you have the settings i used to 3.7Ghz
This was on a P45 board so your probably not going to get the same results.

The 41 series is all you can find *NEW*. You need to buy used to get one of the 775 greats.

And you'll need an *exceptional* 775 overclocking board to get the Q8xxx to move, one with good GTL reference settings.

Eggy: I don't think your chip is so much "golden" as you probably had a good board. My Q8300 was a dud, until I put it on a UD3 board and it went to 3.7 on 1.35VCore. I haven't even topped it out yet, too many other projects, but this weekend I'll push it further just for kicks.

The reality is, the Q8xxx series needs an exceptional mobo to OC well, unlike a Q6600 that will run 3.6 on just about anything with good enough mosfets and 400FSB.

I was hitting that on my chip too, I run 24/7 Folding at 3.8 1.425- I agree with 2thache I think it's more about the boards than anything else though. I'm not sure what everyone defines 'golden' as these days but if yours is then so is mine
