Core 2 Quad Q8400 and voltage - Page 4

Update: my post issues were indeed related to my RAM timings and stuff!

I used Ctrl-F1 to access the advanced settings, and got my FSB : DRAM timing to 1:1. Now I'm booting stable at 3.3Ghz, 413Mhz bus, 1652 Mhz FSB, and 1.375 Vcore.

However, I do hit 80C at full load after a few minutes, so I'll wait till the new cooler is installed to see how far I can push this chip. With these RAM timings, I think I can reach 3.5Ghz at around 1.41 Vcore, which would be awesome. Thanks very much for the advice, everyone.

OP: dont even try to get 4ghz on a G31 and Q8400 it just wont happen.
So he should take the reading in CPU-Z even if it's .1v higher and base everything off of that? Seems like a great way to put alot more voltage through the chip without realizing it.

My Q8400 is pretty stubborn, wont git 3.6. Good luck with yours

I know I'm being obnoxious, but I have two more questions:

- Is this v droop going to affect my performance? If so, what do I need to adjust to prevent it?
- What core voltage should be considered a safe limit? I'm considering going up to about 1.41V.

Yeah, but 3.5 stable is MORE than plenty.

1.45 is the maximum safe voltage in the Intel whitepages (the electrical specs for the chip) but generally I think the feeling for Q8's is ~1.4max for 24/7; I'm running higher because I'm on water and a strong board so I'm more confident in it (and aware that it might go belly up). I was able to get 3.4-3.6GHz with 1.35-1.375 if I remember correctly.

Mmkay. Sounds like I should keep it at around 1.375 to be safe (since this is a stability overclock, not a max speed one) and just tweak the clocks from there. The Frio should have no problem handling temps from there.

Just make sure you have the board cooled well too, particularly the mosfets, as you start adding voltage the temps will really spike on the board. Just make sure you have good airflow over them and you should be fine.

That board can and will blow. There's no heatsinks on the FETs and it's a low-end board. I killed one with a Q6600.

By all means though, keep going, it will make a great story.
