Small green/white stuff in new radiator - Page 2

Actually- distilled water does not boil

Just make sure you rinse out the rad enough if you use vinegar. I just put my fingers over the ports because I didnt know if the vinegar would mess up the o-rings on plugs.

Edit: ^ above, what he said. I didnt measure exactly. Just poured water into measuring cup and then poured vinegar in too. lol!

Would a gallon of distilled be enough for a final rinse?

Distilled can boil...when you heat it in an impure vessel.

A gallon is plenty for a final rinse...even overkill.

I like using glass for when I deal with my watercooling stuff (came from taking college chem- using chemicals and such. LOL). Just insures things are all clean.

a gallon is overkill for a final rinse. The radiators dont hold that much water. I used about half a gallon to clean out and rinse a 240 and 360 (not sure if I did enough, but i was getting clear drains after 2 vigorous shakings)

The boiling point of distilled water at sea level, under standard conditions, is 100ºC.

Changes in the air conditions, pressure, or impurities will alter the boiling point.

It will boil regardless of the purity of the vessel.

Isn't vinegar typically already diluted? On the bottle I've got it says 5.25%.

Well, it is, but it's still strong.

You still have to dilute it with water...do not use it alone.

Its welding flux.

White Vinegar at 10% per volume mixed with 1:10 distilled water, shake shake shake, it will react with the loose stuff and leave you with some green oxidized bits...

White Vinegar is acidic, mixes well, dilutes nicely, and is safe to handle in crude conditions... also its really cheap... so thats why it gets used in radiator prep.

Rinse with distilled a couple good times... till water in = water out, without the trash... and you are good to go after a nice drying session.

The notion is that removing the loose trash is a better compromise than the minimal amount of corrosion that is going to be caused by it, but you don't want to cause more harm than you plan to prevent. (pump damage.)
