All I have now that is half way decent is the kit lens. So I am guessing the sigma will be a huge improvement over it.

Damn incisiveness.

Because think about it. 900 could buy me a GTX 590 and go TRI SLI with my 580 and possibly throw it under water. 900 could buy me Ivy Bridge. It is a lot of money, I am always like this about spending even a dollar. -.-
$900 is indeed a lot of money, but not for a beautiful performing glass. Wish I pulled the trigger when it was only $749
I gave up gaming to purchase my photo gears

Yes, but unlike computer hardware, your lens will hold it's value and resell easily. I cringe sometimes when I recall spending $400 on an EVGA 6800 GT in 2005 (which is now worth little to nothing), but not about lenses.

And congrats on the purchase!

Does spending a lot of a filter matter? I want to grab a polarizing filter and saw this. Price seemed right.

I've used Hoya UV filters on all my lenses and I didn't see any deterioration in image quality. I can't say about their polarizers but at that price why not?
