No. You are wearing the pink glasses. The price you paid for your 4X 580 3 GB cards is blinding you.
6990 is usually at 85-90% of 580 SLI. So it's not ''clearly''. Early drivers also. 90% of the speed for 300$ less.
Nvidia owners should remove their pink glasses. 6990+6970, for the same price, ''clearly'' beat 580 SLI. 2 cards againts 2 cards, 2 slots against 2 slots, same price.
And with mature drivers, I'm sure 2X 6990 will be able to take 4way 580 Quad SLI head-on, since we all know that Fermi scaling is crap compared to AMD 6xxx serie. I'm talking about the POS and overpriced vanilla 1.5GB version here, since Vega has the only 4 3Gb cards that were made for the entire planet...ok, I'm exagerating. They sold 10 or 15 of those in Europe... lol.
We are starting to see some impressive 2X 6990 scaling on some benchmarks on the net... It will ''clearly'' beat 580 Tri-SLI for 100$ less, and breathing on Quad-SLi 580 neck's....
Just looking at Vega Quad SLI cooling, it's totally uncooly crazy IMHO . Too much heat and power consumption to manage. 2X 6990 will be a lot easier to manage, and be at what, 5-10% under in performance? But cooling those 2 cards will cost alot less in waterblocks and cooling parts. And if you look at Vega's cooling solution, wow, so much trouble, headaches, time lost, and $ to keep all the heat and power in check for that Quad-SLi set-up!Edited by Levesque - 3/10/11 at 6:03am
