Disabling unused ports to speed up PC

Thread Starter
Wasn't sure where to put this...

Anyways, I've heard that disabling unused 'stuff' helps speed up the computer - things like IDE ports, unused SATA ports, even the I/O2 ports for keyboard and mouse. I think they are called peripherals? Anyways, I wasn't even sure what to search, and when I did search I didn't find anything about this topic.

i was just wondering what exactly to disable in Bios. I'm not as clueless as I sound here, but just wondering what I should go about disabling. I use 2 USB ports for keyboard + mouse, and an DVI port (with HDMI adapter that came with the GPU) on my GPU for video. I use my onboard ethernet cable port, sound, and USBs, but nothing else. A single hard drive on SATA, and that's it. I'm not asking how, as I can search, but what, I need to disable.

Really, just asking if someone can post a link, thread, or guide about this topic. Thanks.

Most mobo's disable the sata parts of there is nothing plugged into them anyways, just go onto bios, it should say which port your HDD is plugged into along with any CD/DVD drives you got plugged in there and just disable the ones that have nothing plugged into them if they aren't already disabled

^ So what I want to disable is unused SATA ports then. My understanding is that your computer wastes resources checking if something exists, when you could go into bios, disable it, and prevent the PC from having to check if it's there at all in the first place, thus freeing up resources/time so you can boot .00000001 seconds faster. i wasn't sure how many things the PC checked for.

What disabling these usually does is speed up the BIOS POST sequence.
i don't think disabling peripheral ports like USB or the keyboard/mouse ports would save any time as i thought they only activated once something was plugged in, if you notice any change disabling sata ports whatsoever i would be surprised

There's virtually no overhead for any of those services unless there's an active device on those interfaces, in which case you wouldn't want to disable them anyway. I've also never heard of anyone doing this to boost system performance.

You'd probably see better cpu performance by migrating to a dedicated sound card rather than using on-board sound vs. disabling random ports--if you are trying to squeeze all possible performance from your CPU.

This was true back in the old days of the pentiums 2s, 3s and earlier... Nowadays, you are only going to get an unnoticeable performance increase...
It's like RAM. So many timings, a clock.. voltages.. etc.. etc.. it's hard to OC them. Some do for the e-pen, some for bench results. Most like me don't. They are already super fast, with things already happening in ns. I wish I could, but I can't see a fewer ns difference in a RAM OC. This goes for disabling unused ports around your mobo.

What you can do is disable actual services that are not used or you don't use.

like if you type msconfig in the start up search box and go to services you could see all the stuff there and see what you use and what you won't use (Do some research though).

I used this for image creation on slow computers.

I disable unused ports/peripherals in BIOS, but it doesn't really do anything noticeable. I guess it's just an old habit from the IRQ days to free up resources for other components. It's not really necessary anymore.
