there are no heat dispersing fins, anything beyond the thick metal plate on top of the board

NO.

Do not run a system without a heatsink on the chip.
If you do you will fry it.

Order a cooler and wait...

Or you should have a cooler like...
http://www.tcmagazine.com/images/new..._cooler_01.jpg
If you ordered retail.

EDIT2-
After seeing the comments on the 2nd page it seems if the black cooler is attached your CPU heatsink would be on.
EDIT3-
Ok, so that isnt the board your using, dont fire it up.

Wow, I can see it now...smoke...and then fire. Why would you think that you can run a computer without a cpu cooler?

why would they sell a cpu without a cooler?? first i'll blame tigerdirect, selling a 'bundle' of motherboard and cpu without a cooler, what's THAT all aboot

i'll also blame the board here, hehehe, i put my full 'buy' list for this build on another thread and no one caught that i wasn't getting a cooler.
http://www.overclock.net/htpc/955102...y-experts.html

at the very least i had the sense to axe before the excitement of turning this thing on totally took over....

maybe i should just never turn it on actually, right now its only full of potential, the minute i crank it up its going to be heartache after disappointment....

fark, and i'm only thousands of miles from anyplace to buy this ****e

alas, thanks for the warnings!

Nonsense! Iv ran an AMD processor without heatsink for a couple of weeks before, had no trouble. Had to underclock it and undervolt it but it kept within thermal range for watching movies

But then again i would'nt have it for too long if you do, not too sure about the quads.
