Ati XFX 5850 Display Driver Issue

Thread Starter
hello guys,

I have 2 xfx ati 5850 graphics cards crossfired and I have a problem which can get annoying at times. Randomly my display driver will stop working and then restore itself after a few seconds. I'm not sure what the cause of this could be and I'm pretty sure they aren't bad video cards because they work and games work perfectly fine.

I have read/friends have told me that ati is known to have this driver related issue with their software.

Also, when I OC my cards, they will crash a few minutes later and my whole screen will freeze this time with random white or black lines and at that point i have to manually shutdown the computer and reboot it again.

please help!

Thanks in advance

if you overclock your vram too high it will crash your display.

Try overclocking only the core. the ram wont do you much difference anyways.

as for the display drivers, i dont know what may be the cause.

Is this happening when the cards are at stock frequencies? if so I have hte exact same issue with my xfx 5870.... I found if you force the in afterburner to the clocks on your desktop, it runs fine. I believe the cards are not stable at the lower voltage when running at 157/400 but say at 425/600, the voltage increases and then the issue goes away. it is not a fix just a workaround. maybe someone else has found a fix.

Edit: In short, they were too aggressive lowering voltage on these cards imo ( based on my testing)

A display driver crash is usually due to an unstable OC or an overheating problem.

That's a sign of a bad overclock.

Since it's still happening even on stock speeds, it could either be overheating or a driver issue. If it's the latter, try doing a driver sweep, and doing a clean install of the driver

The overheating issue is definitely not the problem. My cards run @ 35 C max on full load, CPU 30 C on full load as well. So my airflow is pretty good. Could it be because I OC'd my Phenom II x6 1055 from 2.8 to 3.2? I have read people overclocking these successfully up to 4.0 without an issue so I find it hard for that to be the issue?
