What Q9550 revision is better?

post #1 of 15
Thread Starter
I'll be swapping my Q6600 with my girl's Q9550 and I'm hoping its a good one. So as the title goes. I'm hoping to overclock it at least 3.6Ghz or maybe 4.0Ghz. Don't worry about my sig. I've got a P45 motherboard here ready and haven't used it yet. Its has FSB 2000, 45nm Ready and Dual Channel DDR3 1600. And can you explain how does different revisions differ from one another.

Thank you,
Armen

E0 I guess. Most of the top overclocking Q9550 on HWBot.org are E0s.

Take a look here. Click on the clock speed to see the stats

EO hands down... The C1 is not a very good clocking chip when the two are compared...

Box codes:
SL8BV = E0
SLAWQ = C1

As far as Batch #, they are all pretty good clocking chips. So long as your board can handle 471+ FSB they all do 4.0 on air

Oh sorry. When I read revision, stepping was the first that came to mind.

It would be rather rare to not be able to do 3.6 on any Q9550. There really aren't any lists of batch numbers that I know of that are reliable. Getting to 4.0 has as much to do with the motherboard, the ram, and cooling as it does with the specific cpu as long as it's a Rev E0. The older C1's tended to hit a wall around 3.6-3.8.

P45 boards with DDR3 don't tend to OC nearly as well as P45 boards with native DDR2 support so that could limit you.

Make sure that the ram will run at 1,000MHz or faster.

Get a good air or water cooler. The stock cooler will barely be able to get you to 3.2GHz if that much. If funds are tight a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ is a good option.

EP45 UD3 + Q9550 EO = Sweetness

Most other boards are going to struggle with that FSB...

My main alternative suggestion would be the Asus P5Q (P45)

However being you would be buying a board & cpu, I strongly recommend just going the distance and getting 1155, would only be about 150 - 200 more....

Also, instead of putting your system specs in your sig like that (which is actually exceeds the 8 line limit) you need to add them to your System Specs. Click on the User CP at the top of this page, then scroll down the left side to the Add System link and enter in your system specs in as much detail as possible. By that I mean 2 x 2gig G.Skil PC2-8500 CL5 ram instead of 4 gig ram, etc. That way we have some idea of what we are dealing with. You can load multiple systems and choose which one to display.

E0 Q9550 ftw. Was about to splurge on a used one, instead just spent it on a good video card. Swap it, clock it!

Well the motherboard I got is good enough I guess. Satisfying enough.

He even used the EZ OC given by the BIOS.
