Help on AMD Budget Build

Thread Starter
Hello,
After seeing my sig rig, my friend wants a custom built pc. He told me that he wants a very fast, light, small budget desktop computer. I assume what he means by budget is less than 500 USD. A big requirement is for it be able to handle the latest Adobe Photoshop.

Please critique this build. Any suggestions or comments are welcomed. Also, if anyone could recommended a good video card and psu that would be fantastic. Thanks!

GPU: GTS 450 or GTX 460 (He'll benefit from CUDA).
RAM: Upgrade to 8GB (With PS, more is always better).

See if you can fit those in.

Lots to work on, and I'll assume no overclocking.

My take:
Phenom II x4 840 + Biostar TA880GB+ - $165 shipped
Patriot Signature 2x4GB DDR3-1600 - $80 after promo code
HEC Blitz case - $42 shipped
Rosewill Green 630W - $50 shipped after promo code
Samsung F3 1TB HDD - $51 shipped after promo [Superbiiz]
Lite-ON 24X - $17.10 shipped after promo
Gigabyte GTS 450 Open box - $98 shipped

Total: $503

If you need an OS... you may be somewhat more budget limited and may have to scrap things usch as the GPU & 8GB RAM

Thanks for the suggestions! Regarding the OS, as a college student he can get windows 7 at a discount price, and there will be no overclock of this machine.

What is the performance difference is between 4Gb vs 8GB RAM in photoshop? Is more better to have just in case?

More is definitely better in Photoshop, especially if you edit megahuge images.

Yeah aim for about 6gb+ for photoshop.

As for gpu a 5770 or gts 450 should be perfect and their cheap now.

See how much a ATI Radeon 5670 HD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102870
And also check out the amd Phenom II X4 955 BE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808

That is a good upgrade from what you have so far also there is no need for more ram you will do fine on what you have.

I run photoshop fine and also 3d image editing fine.

Just a quick note though, that board only supports DDR2 while you have DDR3 RAM listed.

Phenom II 840 is actually just a higher clocked Athlon II X4.

It has no L3 cache.....

Just thought i would point it out

As a photo major in college at the moment and a pretty hardcore photo editor.. I would say 4GB is plenty for Photoshop CS5 and im working on some pretty hefty film scans.
