Also, how do I really now that the digitizer is broken? I'm more or less assuming it is...

Would I be able to take it apart and physically look at it to know?

If the touch input isn't working, so if you turn it on and try to unlock your phone (hopefully you remember where the sliders are), if you feel the feedback(assuming the droid gives feedback when using the slider, not sure) its still working.

Nothing You can do then other than test it with a new LCD screen then, unless you can get it to play a song without the screen... or answer a call? Anything like that should give you an idea as to if it works.
