A crossfired friendly 6950?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so I'm now in the market for a second 6950! woooop!
Ony problem is, I'm a little worried about the tempretures I'm getting and the tempretures I would get if I crossfired with a reference card.
At the moment, when I play crysis for example, I get to tempretures of about ~75-80 and if I were to crossfire them (side by side, look at attachment) I think the top cards tempreture will go threw the roof.

So is there a card that has some kind of cooler that will out perform the refernce card in crossfire in terms of temperatures?

Another question is can I crossfire with a 6950 with 1gb of drr5 ram rather then the 2gb with a 2gb 6950? also I have a xfx (asus bios) card at the moment would I be able to crossfire with, lets say, a sapphire card?

Thanks

Oh really :/
Yeah I have but, it gets pretty expensive when you have to buy waterblocks, large radiators and pumps and what have you..

Are you using the Raven and getting these temperatures? Or is that picture just for reference?

Not too sure about the 1gb and 2gb marriage, but bios shouldn't affect the crossfire ability.

No, I'm just using the raven as a reference to the way I would have them crossfired.

I could possible do a 16x/4x setup with them and have a 4 cm gape in between them both, what effects on performance would that have?

If lets say I was getting 100fps in Battlefeild with 16x/8x configuration what would I get in terms of frames at the same place I got the 100 fps in Battlefeild with 16x/4x configuration? 10 frames less? worth having so your card doesn't heat up and it's not as loud?

There is a thread here on overclock.net with a comparison with 16/16 and 16/8 and so forth.. but I can't find it at the moment.

You can take a look at TechPowerUp's own scaling review for comparisons, shouldn't be off too much.

I recall it's a fairly insignificant amount going from 16/16 to 16/8 or 16/4

The temps are not going to as high as you expect them to be.
Maybe the top card would suffer an extra 5-7°C in crossfire.
You're good to go until your cards reach 85°C (that's my limit).

For example my 5970 (which is on top and very close maybe 3 mm to the bottom card) reach 80°C tops with an overclock to match the frequencies of the 5870.

Nevertheless I do not recommend to run Furmark to stress both your cards at the same time otherwise your VRMS may suffer a lot.

I have the reference cards in crossfire, unlocked 6970 bios and the temperatures goes crazy when I had them sandwich'd like your original pic. I end up separating them with a long crossfire bridge which I got for $10 on ebay and now the temperatures are more manageable and similar. The top card runs about 4-5 degrees hotter than bottom card but I still hit a high of 90 degrees in my huge Alienware Area 51 case with tons of ventilation.

Basically I will not recommend running these cards in crossfire if you have them sandwich'd together. In starcraft 2 I was monitoring my temps with my G15 keyboard screen and it hit a high of 103 degrees for the top card @50% fan speed (I thought that will be enough, apparently not). After that I freaked out and got the long cable. I hit that temperature because I forced 8x AA and 16x AF through Radeon Pro, if it is "Ultra Settings" only I hit max of 99 degrees

I went from 16x/16x to 16x/8x, there is no noticeable difference in performance, but now SC2 runs max temp is roughly 93 degrees and 89 degrees respectively on 30% fan. I can easily run 60-75% fan and the temps will drop to 70s but the system will be very loud
