Xbox 360 & Connectify - PLEASE Help!

I recently moved to India (from UK) and brought my Xbox 360 with me. Until Friday I did not have an internet connection of my own and so was using an unsecured wireless connection to connect at home (whenever it was active, which was only for an hour or two randomly each day so pretty unreliable). This connection had no problem working with my Xbox and its wireless adapter to get online and play on Xbox Live.

On Friday I got a 4mbps connection fitted, which is a cable modem connected to my laptop with an ethernet cable (there is only one output port on the modem and one ethernet port on my laptop), so I am using Connectify to make my laptop a wireless hotspot which my Xbox can connect to.

My computer recognises the ethernet cable as "Local Area Connection" (an unidentified public network) and I must then connect to the internet through a separate (home network) connection named "Broadband Connection", which requires my username and password to connect.

At first I downloaded the newest version of Connectify, which for some reason gave me some kind of "UPnP" error.. I searched online and found this could be a common problem, so I download version 1.2 which was recommended for my purposes.

At first the hotspot worked fine and I played for a good few hours. I was very happy with the program and the set-up.

The next day I went to play again, and this is where the problems started... I was shown the error "Could not obtain an IP address from your router" which I understand is quite a common error. I'm not sure exactly what I did but after around half an hour of unplugging/plugging in my modem, restarting my computer and Xbox and checking and unchecking the "Share this connection" box on the Broadband Connection options it eventually began working again! I once again played for several hours on and off without any problems.

This is where things get frustrating. The next day I went to play once more, and was shown the very same IP error. I thought it would just be a case of tweaking settings again so I repeated all the different checks and routines I had done the previous time... but with no luck. This error just will not go away, and I cannot connect. I must have spent around 3 or 4 hours total since Monday trying to make this work now, and it is really starting to get to me!

Why did it work the first time with no hitches, and the second time (admittedly after a lot of effort) but will not for love nor money work properly now?! It is incredibly annoying to know that this set-up can and should work yet it is so difficult to figure out... why is this?

I have followed all the steps on the FAQs both here and on their official website and also exhausted the seemingly helpful guide at http://xbox360help.blogspot.com/2007...live-test.html but with no luck. I've tried turning Firewalls off, using manual IP/DNS settings, and a whole host of other advised methods.

Please suggest something, I am at the end of my tether here!

I'm running a Windows 7 laptop with Atheros AR5B93 wireless network adapter. If it's relevant the company I am using for internet is YouBroadband.

Somebody please help me sort out this mess!

ps
I've also tried a program called "Virtual Router"... same problem with the IP address error!

Hi, couldnt you just buy a cheap router to connect your 360, laptop and modem into one hub?, it may be wired but it is probably easier and you wont have any 360 wireless latency problems.

Not really an option, for a couple of reasons:

1) The ethernet cable coming from the modem is not plug n play, it requires going through a login program on my laptop.

2) I have played with this set-up before and I know that it works with no loss of latency, so why spend extra money on a router anyway?

More than anything now this is a matter of principle. Why the hell would it work the first two times then for the life of me I can't get it to connect up? It's so frustrating I just want to know what is going on with this thing.

That is all.

I suggest you try another similar software names Virtual Hotspot. It can work with both wired and wireless connection. I never have a problem to get my iPhone, iPod and Xbox connected. And it's really fast. You should try it. It's free.
