Will this bottleneck?

Hey guys I'm new to OCN so excuse me for my noobness

I am planning on making some upgrades in the coming weeks, but not sure what to do...this is the build I have right now:

CPU: intel core 2 quad q9300
MB: gigabyte ep45-ud3r
RAM: corsair xsm2 4gb
PSU: BFG 550W GS
Graphics card: sapphire ati hd 4870 512mb

I plan to upgrade to this:

CPU: AMD phenom II x6 1055T
MB: M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
RAM: not yet determined
Graphics card: xfx amd hd 6870

or just upgrade the graphics card, amd hd 6950 to save some money, and keep my current system

1st question: How does the upgraded system look? any suggestions?
2nd question: If I only upgrade the graphics card, will this cause any
bottlenecks?

THANKS! I can't wait to hear back from the community!

No it shouldn't be a bottleneck. But I would overclock your quad to atleast 3ghz imo.

Yeah I currently have the quad core running @ 3.2 GHZ right now. Also, if I just upgrade my graphics card and keep everything else the same, do you think I should go with the new geforce gtx 560? or the amd hd 6950?

The 560 would be a better single card solution unless you are getting the 6950 2gb edition.

Have a look at the following sticky:

I see...thanks for the help guys! Do you guys think I would be able to see a significant performance boost if I upgrade my current system to an amd hexacore?

Only because you could have the Hexcore running near or above 4ghz with ease. See how high you can get your CPU safely, the differences will be negligible in gaming from 3.6ghz and up.

Are you gaming only?

Stick with your system and upgrade the GPU for now.Once Bulldozer is released consider a platform change.

most games dont use the extra cores unless coded in 2010 onwards very little chance they use more than 2 cores for the games, some can use all cores but newer games are been coded for more cores but a quad at a decent clock will do for quite a while yet, i could run Crysis on a dual-core E5200 (2.5Ghz stock dual core Pentium) OCed to 3.2Ghzish at 17-24FPS (very playable no lag in crysis) by having a really good (at the time) graphics card, GTX260+ so if gaming do your graphics first

EDIT: keep an eye on your power supply when upgrading hardware, if that PSU is not 80+ it could possibly be not powerful enough for an upgrade like the 560ish range

Not in gaming, and certainly not with the CPU you mentioned, which would still have to be overclocked. Games are just now starting to take advantage of 4 cores; I don't think there is a single game out there that takes advantage of more than 4 cores.

Your Q9300 at 3.2Ghz is just fine.

The 6870 is a good choice, but the GTX560 is slightly better and overclocks better too.

I don't know if your PSU is a quality one; if it is, you're fine with either card; if it isn't, better to buy a new one.

As to moving to a new platform, on AMD's side it's a mistake going to the current Phenoms - from where you are coming from, of course. Better to wait for Bulldozer, or go to Sandy Bridge.

Either way, with the CPU you've got right now, and a new GPU, you still have at least one year of fun gaming in your system. And then you can switch to a much faster platform, like Ivy Bridge or what AMD may also have by then.

Thanks for all the reply guys! I've decided to keep the same system that I have, and upgrade my HD 4870 to a HD 6950 2GB version. I also plan to unlock the card to a HD 6970, so im pretty sure that ill need a better power supply. I have a 550W power supply right now. i remember i got that power supply for only $39.99 @ microcenter. are there any suggestions to which power supply i should get for a good value? im looking at these two power supplies right now:

-Galaxis GAPS-700LX = $59.99 (saw this in the CPU magazine, but couldn't really get much info/reviews out of that. anyone know much about this PSU?)

-Kinwin MK-650W = $47.99

what do you guys think about these power supplies and what suggestions would you guys make? THANKS!
