The Phenom II 920/940 are AM2+ as they only have a DDR2 memory controller. They are no longer produced, but you may find some still for sale. These will ONLY work on AM2/AM2+ boards.

All other Phenom IIs (5xx/7xx/8xx/9x5/1xxx) and all Athlon IIs (1xx/2xx/4xx/6xx) are AM3 processors, that are compatible with AM2+ boards, as they have a hybrid DDR2/3 memory controller. These will work on AM2(maybe), AM2+ and AM3 boards. They will also work on upcoming AM3+ (Bulldozer/Zambezi) boards. Hope this helps
