[Expreview] Dual Bios Unlockable HD6850 from Colorfire

Colorfire's HD6850 Xstorm is equipped with an overclocking button. It allows the card to switch between two operating frequencies: Normal mode at the 775/1000MHz (data rate 4000MHz) and Turbo mode at 900/1050MHz (data rate 4200MHz) which is the same as the reference speed of a HD6870. According to Colorfire, the Turbo mode of the retail version of the card will also unlock the hidden Shaders, turning the card into a full HD6870. This is a very exciting good news for end users.

It looks like not only HD6950 can be unlocked to a HD6970, certain models/versions of HD6850 can also be unlocked as well.
Colorfire is the AMD/ATI branch of Colorful (which focus at Nvidia).

For a second I thought this was about a 6850 that could unlock into a 6970 Oh well, a man can dream right?

I didn't think the shaders could be unlocked on 6850s because they were locked down at the hardware level. I'd like to see exactly how they are doing this through a modified BIOS and if it's true, I want to know what they did to unlock those shaders.

Pretty cool.. I remember some 6850s had 1120 shader count so maybe they can unlock. I wonder if the Sapphire Toxic one can, it's got 2x6pin power connectors too.

I believe those were early review samples sent out to various sites.

uuh. so they sent 6850's with higher shader counts so the reviewers would get higher results than what a card would actually get if someone went out and bought one?

Unfortunately neither HIS, nor AMD could provide help with getting the board fixed so I had to reconfigure the shaders on my own. This review shows the correct performance numbers you should expect from a 960 shader HD 6850. If you see other HD 6850 reviews on the web that show surprisingly high performance, please ask the reviewer to check fillrate or using GPU-Z. I know of one other site who received a Sapphire HD 6850 with 1120 shaders enabled, so the problem might be more widespread.
What the deuce?!

Anyone know of a successful 6850 unlocking? Has anyone tried?!
