What lens for the track?

Thread Starter
So I'm going to a drift event this Saturday and I wanted to rent a lens for the day. I don't need the long focal length all the time so I rather rent for this day.

Here are the lenses at my disposal from two different places with one day rental prices.

I will be using it with my friend's T2i. I sold my T1i to save up for an upgrade.

First place
  • Canon EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM---$25
  • Canon EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye---$30
  • Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8L USM---$30
  • Canon EF 17-35mm F2.8L USM---$30
  • Canon EF 17-40mm F4L USM---$30
  • Canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM---$30
  • Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM----$30
  • Canon EF 24-105mm F4L IS USM---$30
  • Canon EF 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM---$25
  • Canon EF 50mm F1.2L USM---$40
  • Canon EF 50mm F1.4---$25
  • Canon EF 50mm F2.5 Compact Macro---$25
  • Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM---$35
  • Canon EF 85mm F1.2L II USM---$40
  • Canon EF 85mm F1.8 USM---$25
  • Canon EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS USM---$35
  • Canon EF 300mm F2.8L IS USM---$50
  • Canon EF 400mm F2.8L IS USM---$65
  • Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di II VC LD---$25
  • Tamron AF 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD---$25
  • Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di LD---$25
  • Tamron AF 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 XR Di LD---$25
  • Tokina 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 AF DX Fisheye---$25
Second place.
Any other tips would be appreciated as well.

Why is the 300 2.8 IS in both first and second place. It must be real good! 70-200 2.8 IS and 1.4 TC.

The 70-200/2.8 IS for sure. Unless you'll be significantly far from the track, in which case the Canon 100-400 or even the 300/2.8 would be better (or use a TC as dude suggested).

I was leaning towards the 70-200 f/2.8. I might just get the teleconverter for a just in case.

Thanks guys.

if you arent used to a 70-200/2.8 yet you WILL GET TIRED OUT by the end of the day.

with that said if the event is FORMULA D then you dont need a 2.8 since you try to get a nice pan when you are shooting. last time i was at infineon i shot at f8-f10 to get 1/60 to 1/160 shutter in shutter priority. if there is a 70-200/4 i would get that or even the 70-300 and pick up a wide when u get to get up close to the car.

i am guessing you dont have media credentials but you can sit up at the edge of the stands and a 200mm is a good length, remember you shoot a canon not a nikon so you can crop

Yeah I wasn't planning on using it wide open. They would be mostly panned shots.

Ohhh yeah.

That T2i 18MP sensor is beast, 5000% crop FTW.

Not really. Autofocus on T2i isn't great, but with IS, you should be able to get some in focus pictures.
