GTX 470 running hot?

Thread Starter
As of yesterday, my computer is freaking out while playing vid games. I'm thinking it has something to do with my video cards running hot. While playing Bad Company 2, after just 10 minutes or so, the screen goes black, and I can't get video back... Right now I am in windows, doing nothing, and this is what GPU-Z is showing me. BTW, I have two GTX 470's in SLI. Is my GPU temp. the culprit?

Thanks!

Yeah thats definitely not normal, my 470 in a hot room idles at 45@40% fan speed. May be the cards are getting too much voltage, especially with it messing up in games and whatnot.

Meh, although not a game, here is a 90 second run of eVGA OCScanner on my wonderful eVGA GTX460 SC EE cards:

OCS3-10-11.jpg

By the way, that is at ~17° ambient, great airflow in the chassis, and stock clocks and voltages.

Yikes man... can you give us a picture of your internal rig? If the cards are literally right on top of the other, that'll cause this problem.

No, they will do it no matter how they are arranged.

It is the coolers, although eVGA refuses to acknowledge it. There are many others with this same issue.

Yes, this is idle temp. I left my computer off for 12 hours last night. Turned it on, after 10 minutes the GPU temp is up to 87C and I haven't even opened any programs/games, and the GPU load is a 0%!This is a new issue, as I have had my setup for 6 months and this is the first time I have had this issue. Please help guys. I have a TWL match coming up, and I can't be crashing mid-game! ahhh!!!!

Video cards are right on top of each other, but they have been like that for 6 months with no issues. please help guys!

take the heatsink off and check thermal compound application. factory may have screwed it up.

or maybe the heatsink is clogged with dust

Although my 470s have waterblocks and I've never tested them with their stock heatsink/fan, the idle temps you have seem way too high. I have my 470s OCed to 800Mhz core - 1800Mhz memory and they idle @ 34C. You're almost three times that number. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges (WC to Stock cooling) but I can't imagine the 470 to idle above 55-60C with stock cooling. Are both cards idling @ those temps? Have you tried to switch them around, put the bottom in the top PCI slot and vice versa to check temps? Have you tried MSI Afterburner to change your fan profile/speeds?
