question before I buy intel-510

Thread Starter
I am about to pull the trigger on the new intel 510 120GB and want to make sure i understand this correctly before I destroy my PC. I have never installed 2 HDD's before let alone installing a new SSD along with my already in use HDD.

If I understand correctly I should just be able to unplug my old HDD, hook up the SSD install windows7 from my upgrade disc, reconnect the old HDD, make sure SSD is set to boot drive and off I go? after this I can worry about setting optimizations and such.

Am I missing something totally or will this work?

If your wipping everything, which it sounds like u are,my intel 510 is coming today. this is what im doing. Plug it in using sata III. Before u install windows, change SSD to ACHI in the bios. Install windows and let windows partition the sdd. No need for firmware update because there isnt one yet, use the one that comes with the 510. Than once everything is up and running on the ssd. Plug in your HDD's and format them.

well I want a fresh install on the SSD but I would like to keep everything on my old HDD if its possible. can I do this without running into problems? I mainly just want it for storage and I dont need alot of storage space.

Yeah, as long as the stuff that u want to keep isnt on the OS. Which it looks like it is rght no. There are ways to do it, I like clean slates. Start burning dvd's now. Than just wipe it.

yea you're right thats probably the best way to go about it. It wouldn't be very hard to do I suppose just backup pictures and all my games are on steam.

Doesn't matter. SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2.

I'm guessing I won't see optimal speeds with sata 2 then I see now that it is 265 reads while the x-25m is 250 reads. I wonder if there would be any advantage to the 510 over the x-25m in this case.

also I see that the revodrive removes the 3Gb/s bottleneck and it is listed as working with my MOBO does anyone have experience with them?
