Upgrade: 2nd 5870, new 6950, or single GTX 570

Have some extra cash left over from taxes, and I'm looking to upgrade some more. My system build is in my sig, for those not clicking here's a basic rundown: Corsair 750w PS, 2x Acer 24in WS, single Diamond Radeon HD 5870 (1G).

I had originally planned on just picking up a second 5870, as they've come down in price quite a bit. However, did a little digging and found the new GTX570s, and saw they were comparable to the HD6950, and all 3 are around the same price range (within $30 of eachother). I mainly game (DCS: A-10, ARMA2, CoD), with a dabble here and there in Vegas and PShop. I can normally run everything fully maxed at 1920x1080 at 45-60 FPS.

The question I pose to you, fellow OCers, what should I do? I know my PS can handle CF/SLI. I know my single 5870 drives the 2 screens just fine. But I've got a spare 19in sitting in my garage that I think would do well as an eyefinity setup for flight sims and ARMA.

I can do the 5870 and CF them, I know that. Can I CF my current 5870 with a 6950? Should I say hell with ATI and get the 570? I've read that DX11 performance is better with the GTX vs the ATI, as well as better AA on most games. But is it worth it to try to sell my 5870 to fund a second 570 down the road?

(Oh and minor note, just upgraded to my first H2O setup. Just a Corsair H50, but still it's a start.)

Well you won't be able to CF 2 different cards.

I am personally a fan of nvidia (my gtx470 is running 870/1740/2100 @ 1.087) as they don't have many driver issues (which I have heard AMD is notorious for).

I also hear that the scaling is better on the 580. Personally, I am looking to get into 2x 5970s because my mobo is CF only.

Hope it helps,
ali

Can't tell you which one to buy, but this may help:

The 6900s are very good at filtering and tesselation, unlike pretty much all other ATI cards. In Dirt 2 maxed @ 1600x900, the difference between 8xmsaa and 0xmsaa is about 9 fps.

The problem is you already have a high end card, but the 5800's don't scale very well in CF, maybe 35%. Considering the options I would point you toward a 570 with the possibility of upgrading to an sli rig, but its really depending on what you want.

You will get the biggest performance increase by buying another 5870.
One 5870 is very close to a 6950.
Two 5870s are over 1.5times faster than a 570.
Two 5870s are close to a 6990, about 90% I think.

And no you cant crossfire, two different series. Generally, the first two numbers must be the same. EG a 58**, 57**, 68**, 69**

you have heard but you have never seen...

driver issue is a myth, cos BOTH companies got drivers issues.

I might be missing something here but there's only 2 ports on the back of a 6970?

Thanks for the input guys, wasn't expecting it so fast. I'll wait for a day or so and see what sort of helpful info I can get here before I go buying anything.

amd 6xxx series gpu have very less driver issues compared to 5xxx series + they scale much better. So I suggest u to get hd6950 (unlock it to hd6970) & add another hd6950 in future.
No u cant cf a hd5870 with a hd6950

if i remembered correctly the CHIVE can CFX cards drom different generations. I'd say anotehr 5870 because it will be cheaper and them you can throw in a physX card or something to make it nicer. 5870 are like 200 a piece on the forum and you can sometimes find super deals at 160 a piece.

I would just buy the 2nd 5870. You will not go wrong. I had that setup for a while and never had issues. Not with maxing games and drivers were fine.
