Upgrade: 2nd 5870, new 6950, or single GTX 570 - Page 2

My 5870 was recently damaged when I mailed my rig so I replaced it with a 570. The 'upgrade' cost me $400 here in Canada and BFBC2 looks exactly the same (actually the 570 stutters in spots the 5870 never did, especially when I'm on a helicopter).

I really liked my 5870 a lot but I would never crossfire it. It doesn't scale well enough compared to newer cards. I also never would have replaced it as to do so you have to spend significant money and a card like a 570 is simply not a significant upgrade to gameplay.

Do you have good audio for your rig? Personally I'd sit on the 5870 and go a different direction for upgrading. In my case it'd probably be software. If you don't have sound you're happy with then maybe that route would be good? I dunno.

If you were able to sell the 5870 for a decent price though, that might change things a bit.

I'm liking the idea of unlocking a 6950. I just put a new sound card in over the weekend, new headset, new H50, new mouse/keyboard within the past 2 months, TrackIR. So I'm pretty much down to video card, power supply, or RAM. I'm happy with my PS and RAM, so vid card it is.

The HD 6950 is a better value than the GTX 570; however, the GTX 570 does perform slightly better. The HD 6950 is only marginally better than your HD 5870. I would say get a 2nd HD 5870.

Unlocking the 6950 only gives you a ~3% boost. The biggest gains are in overclocking it. But even so, you won't see much of a gain going from 5870 to 6950. For best performance, I would add another 5870.

Get the 2nd 5870 USED from the marketplace here and let it rain. CF 5870 will handle pretty much anything you throw at it. That whole 35% scaling someone mentioned earlier is BS...

Get another Radeon HD 5870 and CrossFire. The performance should be in the middle of the Radeon HD 5970 and the 6990. Around 10% faster than the 5970, but some 15% slower than a 6990.

driver issue is a myth, cos BOTH companies got drivers issues.

I understand this, as Nvidia 259.99 was one of the WORST drivers I have ever run across. However, I am not knocking AMD or nVidia. Just stating what is commonly complained about.

Price for performance your best bet is another 5870. If you're hesitant about going CF because of microstutters, bad drivers, and other problems go ahead and grab a single card. I love my 570 and I'd recommend it.

The 6900s are very good at filtering and tesselation, unlike pretty much all other ATI cards. In Dirt 2 maxed @ 1600x900, the difference between 8xmsaa and 0xmsaa is about 9 fps.

The problem is you already have a high end card, but the 5800's don't scale very well in CF, maybe 35%. Considering the options I would point you toward a 570 with the possibility of upgrading to an sli rig, but its really depending on what you want.

5800's scale at 35%? Show me where you found this because this does not support your claim. IMO, it really comes down to the games you play. Some games will do much better with crossfire while others will not. Do your research and make sure the games you play not only support crossfire, but have a gain big enough to warranty crossfire. If i were you, i would try another 5870 and see how you like it. Worst case scenario, you just have to sell them and buy something else if you are not happy. Just remember, the 6xxx series scales really well and will only get better with time so this is something to think about.

EDIT: I just looked at the 570 vs 5870 comparison. IMO, The gains just arent big enough to jump to that card. I would look at the 580 if you wanted to go green, inless of course you plan on running sli.
