fractional t1 fast enough for online gaming?

Thread Starter
So out where I live I have no options for cable or FiOS services, its wireless (Clearwire or PogoZone), dial-up or a T1 line. I can't afford $800 a month for a full T1, and the best I could do would be a fractional @ 128Kbps. I know latency wouldn't be an issue - is 128k enough bandwidth?

edit: sorry if not posted in right place - wasn't sure where to start this thread...

yes, games have been optimized in general to run on a wide variety of connections. 128k will not be great, but it should be enough for decent gaming. Also depending on what type of game you play, there are all kinds of tricks that developers have added to games to make them feel lower latency than they are, even if your connection isn't very good.

No. Unless you like 125-200ms pings.

Mostly I guess I'd be playing CSS, DoDS, maybe crisis 2...

My current ping fluctuates between 60 to greater than 999 in crisis 2, changes about every second.

It should help the latency a bit but it will almost always depend on the location to the server you are connecting to...

you can have T1 connection but if you're connecting to like Antarctica you will have some sort of lag

in most cases for games like CS and such a cable line is fast enough--just make sure you find a server that's closer to you

I'd give Clear/Sprint a try. Average latency ranges from 75-125, but it should be much cheaper than T1 and offer higher bandwidth

AFAIK, Clear has a 30 day trial

bah - clear apparently doesn't have coverage out here. So I'm stuck with pogozone (what I'm using now) which is fine for streaming from hulu and whatnot, but gaming is impossible.

Need to see if I can convince the wife to go for the fractional line (doubtful). Only other thing I can think of is contacting comcast and seeing how many houses they would need to sign up to run the cable one more mile and then try to get my neighbors to sign something saying they'd sign up...
