Connecting a ton of fans

Thread Starter
I'm recieving a Seasonic M12ii in the mail tomorrow and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to be connecting 5+ case fans... Do power supplies these days come with fan connections? Do motherboards have a ton of pins for fans? I have no idea. Sorry for the stupid question, but this is the first true enthusiast build I've done. I've never had to use so many fans!

One of my fans came with a 4pin to small 3-pin connector, but I'm worried that's all I'll have to work with unless I order more of those fans.

You can wire your fans directly to the 4 pin molex if you are comfortable doing that sort of thing. Or you can just order more adapters.

PSU's have molex connectors and many fans come with a 3/4pin to molex adapter which you can use to power fans. If the fans don't come with them you can buy them cheaply. Sometimes PSUs come with a couple too. Keep in mind you won't have any control over those fans they will just run at full speed when the computer turns on.

There is usually a 4 pin for the cpu fan.

If you are using 200mm fans I was told it is not a good idea to use the fan headers for those as the power usage can burn them out.

If your fans aren't loud and you dont mind the noise, then you can hook the molex connectors up in a series like stacking lego blocks. Otherwise you can use 3 pin fan splitters and attach them to your motherboard if they both don't consume more than 1 amp.

A fan controller makes everything easier.

You could use something like this, if you didn't want to use a fan controller.

That's the other thing... I know they'll run at 100%, and I guess I'm okay with that for now, but I would like to get a fan controller sometime in the future. To be honest though, I'm really not that impressed with what's out there right now. Between the prices, the quality and the style, just... ew. The non-LCD screen ones with just the nobs seem to be the only thing decent. I may just pick one of those up.

Thanks for the info on the wires, I think I'm set. My case actually has those tucked into the side already, had no idea what they were though. It's been so long since I've custom built, and this time I have more than a paper route to fund it with > : D

Have you looked at the Scythe Kaze master and Kaze pro? I like the styles of those. They are available in black or silver with glossy or brushed aluminum faces. I have a 4 channel Kaze Master with a black glossy face. I think it is a nice subtle design.

I agree that many of the fan controllers are retarded looking and way to flashy looking.

+1 Thanks for the info, I like that one. Do you know of any good fan controllers that are over 4 fans? Or better yet actually, could I connect two or three fans to one nob with this thing? My radiator has 3 fans on it. Having those on the same knob would solve my problems.

The Kaze Pro can do 6 channels. The Kaze Master is 4 channels.

And yes you can splice fans together. You can wire them together or buy a splitter cable.

Like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-855-_-Product

I am running 5 fans on my 4 channel Kaze Master. Channels 1, 2, and 3 run the three 180mm fans on the bottom of my FT02 case. Channel 4 runs both 120mm fans on my CPU heatsink. There is 1 more fan in my case, a 1000 RPM 120mm exhaust fan but it is virtually silent at full speed so I just have it plugged straight into the power supply with a molex to 3 pin adapter.
