EVGA GTX 470 SLI - one of those last minute doubts

Thread Starter
Hey all. After such a long time lurking these forums i'm pretty excited about posting! Well here goes.

I'm getting ready to build a new i5 SB system. I got all the parts except for the motherboard due to availability, plus i'm still doing my homework (though i'm pretty sold on the P8P67 Pro). So you know how you're just sitting on a bunch of hardwares and can't put them together and start having all kinds of thoughts. Would someone pls just be kind and reassure me that 2x470 750/1750 @ 1.05v will run under acceptable temp even with summer coming up? The new P67 boards have 2 slots between the cards so they shouldn't sandwich each other right? I've never run a dual card config before, and as you can see my current board doesn't have SLI, so I have no way of finding out for myself.

Some additional info: None of em has the high flow bracket. I put IC D.7 on both of them, and on their own they idle ~38 (@51Mhz they better do...), ~60 (45% fan) when watching youtube, and ~70 (75% fan) gaming. It's strange though because GPU usage never passed 60%, so i'm sure my e7200 is bottlenecking the HELL out of them, that's why i'm having doubts in the 2500k setup GPU usage will go up, bringing temp into the 80+ range... (OCCT brings them to 90 @ 100% fan )

I apologize for the wall o' text... just another poor soul in need of some peace of mind hope you understand

You'll be fine, the Pro has nice spacing.
The 2500k will let those 470s stretch their legs.

They would be fine, you may have to increase the fan speed a little though to get more air flowing through them.
Im running two HD5850's that are sandwiched together with a 9800GT and they never go above 80*C

Thanks for the responds guys!
1 more quick question: would 750W pushing it too close with both cards OC'd? I bought the Corsair 850HX, but newegg just sent out a new promotion for the 750 version which will save me $40, so i'm a little tempted to return mine.
@Kal777: yea i'll be jamming them into a K62, so space wouldn't be as generous as the full tower big boys... But I guess anything is an improvement over my 300 hah
@grunion: hey man I just watched The Chinese Connection last night on Netflix! Can't believe the last time I saw it was 14 years ago, on a tape haha. Good times good times...

Looks like there's only one empty space between cards on that board. If you aren't dead-set on that particular board, you might look for one w/an additional space (if there are such boards ... never really checked out SB myself).

Anyways, yeah, two 470's in SLI can get hot, but not dangerously so. Case airflow will be important in keeping temps down (a side fan is good).

In the worst case you could shave off a bit off the voltage and clocks and they'll cool off significantly. There's VERY little difference in running 700 vs 750, nothing you'd ever see w/the naked eye, and you should be able to do 700 with like 1V or 1.012V max. That will def. help.

OCCT is about the worst case scenario really. Normal gaming, esp. if you're fond of vsync (like I am), you're unlikely to ever hit 90C. And even 90C is okay w/these cards. I don't freak til I hit 95C (which has never happened, but I have Cu TFII coolers, so ...)

brettjv, thanks for the response!
About the motherboard, well there's the maximus extreme that I think has like 4 PCI-E 16 slots??? but it's almost double what i wanna spend on a board so sadly it's out of the picture.
Great information about the performance difference and suggestion about voltage! I'll definitely do that, gonna fix them @ 1v and work the core/mem around that. Plus that should make me feel a little more comfortable about switching the 850W corsair for the 750. These cards run stock fine @ 0.9v so if SLI scaling really turns out to be as good as what i've read, they'll probably be more than enough for me @ stock. And yes i also like to force vsync and tripple buffering
/cheers

There is a 2 slot gap on P8P67 Pro.

Yea I think what brettjv meant is that when both cards are installed there's only 1 slot between them. That might be small for him but more than generous for me, since from a lot of what i've read, people seem to run fine with dual cards tightly close to each other. Hell, i'm even getting greedy and looking at this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&Tpk=470%20amp
$80 rebate looks kinda shady, and I got zero experience with zotac. It's just a little tempting because a buddy has been asking to take one of my evga for 185, and paying an extra $35 for a ZF3000 isn't too bad, is it?

Ah yeah

It's still about a 2.5-3" space when 2 cards are installed, plenty of breathing room.

That AMP will have to be installed in the second slot, if you run sli.
