XCode 4 is out, and it's 4.99??!

I mean it was 0, and i could totally see it being a $499, but $4.99? Seems like they want a cheap buck, or a cheap four almost five bucks...

Great, and that's AFTER they've already charged us for $99/year for the freaking Apple Store. Will it ever end?

For me it says Xcode 4 is free if you are part of the developer program, so at least they aren't hitting you with $99 a year + $5 for Xcode.

"You must be an iOS or Mac Developer Program member to download Xcode 4 or you can purchase Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store."

I think for something like XCode $5 is decent. I realize it runs into the common issue of moving from a free piece of software to something that is paid and that always brings a negative stigma.

Oh noes.... Cheapskate.

Does it shock you that software that took them hours to build and money to pay the developers actually costs money to buy? Not everything in life is free, and in this day and age you were lucky it was free before...

The real hinderance here is that there are tons of free ways to do what Xcode does, but not so many for Mac. And a lot of people using xcode then turn around and help apple make money. It not exactly a leisure tool.

Indeed. If Apple wants to stay relevant, they would make it easier for developers to work with their platforms, not harder. Nickel and diming developers, and then telling them they can't publish their apps for totally arbitrary reasons, is not a good way to make money in the long term. I already was reluctant to do iPhone development; and this is just going to keep me away.
