Basically: It now costs $5 to develop applications for the Mac, and now they are just one short step away from locking apps to the Mac app store and charging everyone $99.

By comparison, it costs $25 (not $25/year, just $25) to develop on Android, and the IDE and all of the documentation and support is completely free.

Correct, but like i and others have said, devs did put time into this, time that could of gone to make something a whole lot more productive or beneficial for apple.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not paying for the $99 developer license atm and I'm still able to download Xcode 4 for free.

The problem is there's never enough gravy.


Apple is putting short term profits over long term gain. They've been riding the momentum of the 1 year head start they had on Android.

They've been pretty much stagnant for the past 2 years. Rather than pad their lead they've chosen to nickel and dime both the consumers and developers.

The only thing keeping iOS going right now is marketshare, which they are losing to Android.


If you want to publish an App on iOS you need:
1. A mac. Cheapest is the Mac mini at $700.
2. Xcode. $5 just to get your feet wet.
3. Developer subscription. $100/year.


If you want to publish an App on Android you need:
1. A computer. Any computer, running any OS.
2. Eclipse. Its free, amazing, will run on anything with Java. Or you can just build your apps in a web browser using App Inventor.
3. A market. You can pay $25 for google to host your app, or you can distribute it yourself.


The only possible explanation for why anyone is even bothering with iOS is that there are a lot of iPhones out there, and everyone still thinks of Android as slow, single-touch, first gen devices.

Apple is trying to milk it; but by charging so much it also keeps the the people who say to themselves 'i'll try to make an app and submit it and see how it does' aka by charging more they keep the not so serious people out of the app market. Which obviously has its cons as well.

Wow, just as the iphone apps are declining, as in, a lot of developers are choosing to make apps for other phone companies due to Apple pricing, they go and charge for xcode. I feel it is a silly move.

As for the posters saying these devs worked hard to make the software, they make more than enough back from the published apps made with this software. There is profiting and there is greed. I'm sure it's no secret to most of us now than Apple does seem very money grabbing at times.

I can't even do a FREE iPhone app without paying Apple's annual fee, unless I want to restrict it to jailbroken phones only. (For the app I have in mind, this is unreasonable.) Even with Android, I don't HAVE to put an app on the Market; I can distribute it myself.
