Need a MOBO for Audio Production and Gaming (want 24GB RAM)

Hi,

I have roughly $2200 to build a system for use with a DAW and a huge sample library, as well as gaming. I am going to get 24GB of preferably 1600Mhz RAM, and I need a MOBO that won't give me any issues using that much RAM.

I am probably going to be getting an i7 960 and an Nvidia GTX 570.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

G1 Assassin is a really great board. The problem with the RAm is that the board doesn't matter, the CPu does. You need a CPu with a good memory controller, sadly all of them are westmeres or gulftowns. Certain bloomfields are good, but you wont know until you try.

With that much ram I'd probubly start considering going to a Xeon processor and Workstation grade motherboard....

or a 990x and you are set. Gigabytes board are well built for long periods of use.

That does not mean alot for me... I'm looking for a solution, not a period of time. Sorry.

With 24GB of RAM.... will you need ECC? This one point will determine the rig.
Once again...

I don't know if I really need ECC... I'll be saving the projects quite often. It would be nice, but I don't think it's necessity.

I don't think you understand. The problem with your build is the memory. its not that its a problem, its more of a hassle. The board has very little to do with whether or not all your memory is recognized and runs at full speed, why? because the memory controller is in the CPU.

The Gigabyte G1 Asssassin is their new X58 board. Its very big, you need an extra large case, but this thing is very strong with a 990x in there. I am getting RAM speeds and i can fill up all my RAM slots on voltage much less than other i7 900 series processors.

I only have 12gbs of ram available in total, and it is made up of 3 different pairs of RAM mixed, and they all get detected and all can run at 1600mhz. The thing is I use very little voltage to do that. If you do a search people who want to use 24gbs or RAM have a very hard time doing so on i7 900 series platforms at stock. you are going to have to increase the qpi/vtt voltage a tiny bit if the IMC in your processor isn't that good.

The board I mentioned as integrated XF-I audio and some killer NIC. But i did a review on it, and they built that board very well, and it overclocks my 990x to 5.2ghz, my RAM to 2100mhz, and does 231 blck without slowmode. All on air.

You said you wanted to game and you want a heavy duty motherboard, that is a really great board. But hey i also think GB makes the best X58 boards.

Someone recommended you Gigabyte G1 assassin mobo, but I would say dont get that mobo cuz its very expensive ($529 at newegg)
but I must admit its one of the best x58 board.
I would recommend u to get Asus RampageIII Formula, very nice board,$280 approximately,u can easily run 24gb ram without issue on this board.
Hope u like this proposal.

I am looking at the Formula, but the Extreme offers the extra power phase for RAM. Is that going to make a difference? Other than that, I like the Formula better than the Extreme.

Also, I cannot afford a 980x or 990x.
