MSI 560 TI Frozr - First Time OCing Help

Thread Starter
Hey folks,

Been reading the site for some time now, but first real post. I want to preface this by thanking you all for the invaluable information you've put out there, it's turned "tinkering" with my computer into a really fun hobby!

Today I received my MSI 560 Twin Frozr II, as an upgrade to the integrated graphics (HD 4250) on my Asus motherboard. What a world of difference, right?

Following the guide at the top of the forum, I fired up MSI Afterburner, GPU-Z, and ATItool to begin playing with overclocking. With small increments to the core clock, I was able to hit 950/1900/2100 without any artifacts popping up in ATItool, but as soon as I went above that, I started getting the "pings" with yellow dots.

With my new 950/1900/2100 settings, I downloaded Furmark and OCCT, both of which ran smooth without any problems, reaching temps of around 70C @ 60% fan usage. I also ran the benchmark tool in Just Cause 2 (free with my card) at max settings, and it was flawless. With all three of these programs, however, as soon as I hit 960mhz I start crashing.

Since my Core Voltage is only .987 right now, will adjusting it higher help? What would a safe level to test be? I'm assuming 70C at full load isn't particularly bad, but as soon as I raise the voltage it might get freaking hot fast. I'm also wondering if, because I get artifacts in ATItool at 960, it would make any difference at all.

Thanks for any help guys,

Rourke

A higher overclock means you need higher voltage to support the higher clock speeds. For 960 core, try around 1.037v. I'm stable at that voltage for 950 core. Just experiment around with different voltages.

Although I'm not quite sure what the safe voltages are for this card, you obviously don't want to go too high. I'd recommend to not go over 1.08v, just to be safe.

Thanks for the reply, Ipwn!

I set it to 1.037v and launched Furmark to see what sort of temps it reached... about 3 minutes into it I hit 77C with the fan at 70% and lost signal and had to reboot the PC. That makes me pretty damn scared to go over 1.037!

Nothing wrong with 950/1900/2100 I suppose.

And you're on the MSI Twin Frozr? With my current overclock I never go over 62C, with ambients of around 80F (it's hot here in California). How's your airflow? I don't think you should be hitting those temperatures.

I was running Kombustor, basically the same thing as Furmark. Never surpassed 62C.

Currently got the side panel off so airflow is most likely confused. Ambient is 21C. GPU temp when idle at stock speeds is about 27C.

It only went to 70C when I OC'd to 950 and ran Furmark and OCCT, and in both instances the fans were at 60%. When I manually set the fans to 100%, the same tests hover around 60C.

I was under the impression, from one of the stickied topics, that anything under 95C wouldn't be too dangerous?

Those temps aren't dangerous, but it's unusual that you lost signal and were forced to reboot. What power supply are you using?

Use the MSI Afterburner automatic fan control. Double click the graphed line and it will change from stepped to linear. It will keep your temps in check
