Downloading the next WU in advance?

Thread Starter
So I recently got into folding on my sig rig, using the SMP console client. I followed zodac's guide to setting it up, though I think I'd prefer using Fahmon over HFM.net

Anyways, the problem is that the internet connection in my dormitory gets cut off every 8AM, then comes back around 4 or 5PM. This really got in the way of folding, since my client would be done with a WU around those times, and then just kept trying and failing to upload the results and downloading the next one. Does anyone know a workaround for this?

Well don't bonuses get applied based on when you download it and when you turn it in? So even if there were a way to download wu's in advance it would kill your ppd.

Oh, so I get less points for folding an "old" WU? I see. But I think could live with that more than having to turn in one WU that completed at 8:30AM and had to wait until 5PM to submit it.

Maybe possible to create two SMP clients on your pc (or 3, or however many you can complete within that time frame). Run one, when it finishes (or is at 99%) pause it. Run the other.

By the time the internet comes back on, just run them and you'll be uploading two within X time. Yeah, you'll lose some bonus points--but you'll be making points where you otherwise would be doing nothing.. so I guess that is a bonus?

Or maybe tether a phone to your PC to upload/download WU's while the net is out or use a 3g card?

Great idea! Never really thought about that. I might need to set up some remote administration for it though, since I'm away from it a lot, lately. But yeah, as you said, it's definitely better than a lone client waiting nine hours or so to turn in one unit.

I considered that, yeah. Ultimately, I'd be looking into a secondary means of connection once I raise enough cash, since I could definitely use it outside of folding. But your first idea could work for the meantime.

No problem. I've used http://www.tightvnc.com/ (Tight VNC) to control my folding rigs from afar. I had a couple of them setup in a different room with no monitors or anything, but from my bedroom pc (on the local network) I was able to easily remotely control them all. Works across WAN, too but might be a bit laggy.

Bear in mind that if the internet is off, you won't be able to control the machine/s anyway...
