fan noise

I just got a new fan for my pc yesterday but don't find it to be much quieter. I was thinking that maybe it's just running too high and I could change the speed on it. the new fan I put in is a Cool Master super fan 80SU2. the box says it runs at 2400rpm with 25dba. maybe it's just that I have loud fans? could somebody tell me how to set the speed lower please. thanx

oh yeah, the fan I changed is on the heat sump. I haven't changed the one on the back of the box but don't think it's loud at all. the guy at best buy said maybe the fan rattles and I should put some paper under it to dampen the vibration but I don't think it's loose at all. it doesn't wiggle.

I think you need a new case. Modern cases don't use 80mm fans: 80mm fans do not move much air when quiet, and are very loud when they do move air.

The smallest fans modern cases use are 120mm. You will find 140mm to 230mm fans in cases these days.

Lurk around and read lots of posts. Also look at reviews on line of cases. Only then spend money.

hey Ehume, I hear what your saying. I was planning on buying a case eventually but I really love my Gateway factory case. but anyways, I probably could put a 92mm fan on my heat sump but what about a 120mm on the side of the case that has the air holes? my pc didn't come with one but I'm sure there's a plug for that, no?

Everyone here's going to recommend getting a new case. The factory ones from the big companies are just too restrictive overall. You can get decent cases that fit 120mm fans for very cheap these days. For under $100 you could easily get a decent case and a simple fan controller, if your mobo doesn't have enough fan headers. You could hop over to the case section to look into options... Definitely don't need to spend $200 like I did xD

How about trying some anti-vibration grommets? Or Anti-Vibration Screws? I noticed a huge difference when using them, to not.

You could mod your case to do most anything, but you'd burn off time and energy, not to mention the cost of fans - and 92mm fans have essentially zero resale potential. So:

+1

Most cheap high airflow cases come with 140mm fans or larger. For under $100 (sat $70) you can get excellent cases.
