Updating Spinpoint F4 2TB Firmware Help

Thread Starter
Hey, I'm trying to figure out how to update the firmware on this drive. Newegg has a slick deal on it and I'd like to know how to do it BEFORE I buy it so I can feel content with buying it.

Their website says something about booting into DOS mode, and I found a FreeDOS live cd on that I could use. Is this what I should be doing? I can't figure out how to run the program Samsung provides when booting into it. I have burned both to separate CDs.

Please help!

thats what i used
i made a usb drive into a bootable dos disk then put the program on it after it was formatted using that tool
then i booted from the usb stick and typed "F4EG" - the name of the program you should of downloaded from samsung
typing the name in dos runs the program and then wait maybe 15 sec and it will be confirmed that is worked then DO A HARD REBOOT do NOT click ctl+alt+delete
hold your pc's power button till it shuts off then remove the flash drive reboot go into bios and change the boot order back to your primary drive then you should be good to go

hope that helped...

Before you go to the trouble of flashing it check the date. This is from Samsung Technical Support. It's highly doubtful that the drive you will be getting would have a production date from last October or before so you probably won't need to flash it. Of course if Samsung knew what they were doing the new firmware would show as a different version but it doesn't so you can't go by that to tell you anything.

Dear Customer,

As long as the manufactured date is after 11-2010 then the unit has already been applied the patch.

Thank You for choosing Samsung.

Yes. It's on the right hand side of the label about halfway down just to the right of of where it says ROHS Compliant. It will be in the format of Year.Month (as in 2010.8, 2010.11, etc).
