Is 3.6Ghz enough for gaming?

Thread Starter
Is a 965 at 3.6Ghz adequate for gaming or should i push for more? Reason i ask is because i heard that the Phenoms were actually slower than the intel QXXX generation of CPU's and those are pretty old.

you should be fine. Especially if you are gaming at 1600x900, I seriously doubt that you will run into any bottlenecks at 3.6

You're fine at 3.6ghz. There isn't really much more you can do with the CPU after that for significant increase in performance.

People vastly overestimate what's needed for gaming. 3.6 is a ton of juice for high fps gaming. It's like the powersupply thing - People think they need 1000 watt supplies. They think they need to be at 4 ghz to game.

Reality - you won't notice, with your eyes and playability - a difference in many cases depending on the jump in hertz.

You might win that awesome game called Benchmark though. I love that game - I play it all the time. My kill death ratio is kick ass!

3.6 is awesome.

THE MAIN THING - is are you happy with your performance in game? If it's chugging - then you can start looking at options / upgrade paths / reasons!

start er up and have some fun!

It's definitely enough. You should be worrying more about your GPU, to be honest, if gaming is your prime concern.

Also, you heard wrong. My 965's benchmarks rubs elbows with the lower i7's.

More OC. Try to get as high as you can. Also it depend on the game. If you play SC2 or GTA 4, Crysis 2, BFBC2 more GHz will be better. My Core i7 @ 2.8Ghz got a big hit in Crysis 2 and i could feel it. GPU usage drooped to 80%s. Put it back to 4.4Ghz and a straight line 99%.
