Is 3.6Ghz enough for gaming? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Most games run fine except for GTA4 and Assassins creed 2. I heard those were CPU heavy games and my GPU is never even close to 100% usage in those games. always around 60% or something.

in IV i get from 28-36Fps (chuggs abit when **** hits the fan) and assassins creed also is around 37-45Fps when i look at the entire city from a height. i was wondering if i needed more CPU Oc for those 2.

my 965 BE runs stock @ 3.4 and gtx 460 still stock @factory OC setting
GTA IV, TDU2, well name the game and if it can't run it between 30-40 fps in 1080p then i'll overclock or change for an hexacore

Actually, Phenoms are quite good gaming CPU's.

My rig's "gaming" overclock is at 3675mhz on a slightly overclocked 5850, and it's more than enough horsepower for even the most demanding games @ 1980x1200.

So you should be fine

I read an article on CPU speeds some time ago. They tested a bunch of CPUs, from Core i3's and Athlon II X2's and up to Core i7's and Phenom II X4's. Speeds from 2 GHz and up to 4 GHz in 200 MHz increases. From 2 GHz up to 3 GHz that was a large difference between the slowest and fastest. @ 3 GHz and up the difference was not that big, 5-10FPS, and @ 3.6 GHz there was no difference. They used a HD 5970 @ 1920x1080. So yes, 3.6 GHz is plenty power for gaming.

Cpu dependent games like zellot said will need more cpu power than that. Sc2 sucks on phenom ii's, I used to have one and will maxed out settings, I was only getting like 20-40 fps with a gtx 580, and my phenom II quad was clocked at 3.6ghz. I switched to this 2500k and at 4.6ghz, I got double the performance with a constant 40-80 fps.

My 1055T + GTX 275 GPU game no differently from 3.5 Ghz - 4.1 Ghz

Maybe 1 FPS, lol.

As stated many times you are better off with a high NB OC than a high cpu clock speed, unless you are getting bottlenecked by your cpu of course.

IMO the higher the clock , the smoother the performance will be .. dpending which games really .. dx11 benchmarks etc no , but crysis , gtaIV and many others will take utilization of the extra clock speeds .. but 3.6ghz is still ok i guess , though im biased as im on nearly 4.3ghz ... i would never down clock , 3.6 would feel slow to me .

I suggest getting a h50 or something , and going 4ghz .. That is all you will need , and you will know ur cpu isnt a bottleneck .
