Thinking of going Intel...Need Help FAST!!!! - Page 2

I'd go with the 2500k and a UD4. I just prefer the power delivery on that. For a CPU-only type overclock, the power delivery should be excellent.

i7-950 & UD3R.

Nice combo.

ok just making sure. Usually on AMD boards it'll say what it can do max.

Do you need the extra threads of an i7? If you do, then get a 2600k and a p8p67 pro or p67a-ud4.

If your just a gamer, don't bother with an i7 and just get the 2500k and one of the motherboards above.

Well I am a gamer and have done some benching on my AMD setup but like I said I have a phase unit coming and REALLY wanna get into benching. That and just want to see how the other half lives, lol.

EDIT: Anyone remember how much the ASUS P8P67 PRO went for. Its under revision so newegg has no prices on those boards.

Thats always nice to have. I'll admit, I haven't used mine much since I bought it. I tried to use it today, but my board blew up before I ever got to use it.

As for benching SB, it can be more of a hassle than it's worth. Finding a chip that'll do what you want is no fun at all. I went through about 6 chips before my P67-GD65 died. That's when I called it quits and gave up on SB. The numbers are nice, but when you don't have a chip that clocks well, it gets frustrating quick. If you look at other forums, there are tons of people always selling 2600k's. They haven't found the right one either.

At least with other platforms, a bad chip can still do fairly well with enough voltage and when it's cold enough. SB is either you have a good chip or you don't. Cold just helps keep it alive.

Really, thats disappointing. Maybe I should just stick with my AMD then. I am hoping to get around 5 +/- gigz on this setup so with some people hitting 4.5 on low low volts I was kinda guessing around 6 with SB. But now it sounds kind of unrealistic.

6ghz sounds unrealistic. Highest is like 5.9ish i think right now. But you can bet that person has gone through a ton of chips until he found that one. The ones I had did between 5.2-5.4ghz. A 5.5-5.6ghz chip isn't bad at all and maybe newer batches are getting higher clocks, but I lost interest. Then getting memory to work properly was a pain for me. I couldn't get my hypers to clock worth a damn on any of the P67 boards I had, yet I can run them fine on my x58 boards.

I think benching the x58 when frozen is more fun, but you aren't going to see numbers like with SB. SB will pretty much beat a regular i7 at everything. A hexacore is good for vantage, but that's about it. With some LN2, it'll clock high enough to beat low clocking SB in some benches, but then again, you need a $1k chip.

Lately I've been on the hunt for a hexacore. I just need to sell some stuff. I really just want to do some vantage and the hexacore is going to help.

Well my hexcore just went up for sale, lololol. Either way it'll be faster than my AMD setup whether I go with an i7 or SB. Just going to suck to start over. Everything is different. But thats what keeps it interesting.
