Total War or...?

Empire Total War is on sale on steam, so I was thinking about getting it. I really liked Rome Total War, and figured I should update with a newer one. However, I'm not too crazy about the 18th century. I could spend hours with romans and thought they were awesome, but I'm afraid I'll get bored with this.

Is there any other RTS games that encompass multiple eras and yet is as good as the total war series?

I didn't like Empire or Napoleon for the same reason (that and I don't like gun fights in Total war). Medieval 2 was fun though. There's Shogun 2 coming out which looks good too, you can download a demo of it. If you like Shogun 2 you can buy the whole Total War pack (has every Total war except Shogun 1, includes Shogun 2) which is only like 20 bucks more than Shogun 2.

Yeah I've heard good things about Medieval. I've also played Age of Empires and I didn't really like it. I'm not sure why, just how it played...

I'll look for that Shogun pack though.
