Fractal Design Define R3, My Opinion. - Page 3

I don't have a regular HD :-) Only an SSD. There is nothing in the 5.25 bay. To each his own :-)

What's your point?

There's the odd couple of people that aren't understanding here.

Define R3 = not enough airflow with my rig, so the fans ramped up, thus was louder. Was too hot.

CM 690 II = loads of airflow, fans stayed quiet, nice a cool.

The rig is exactly the same when I used both cases. The fact I have a 480 is moot point. It's runs cool and COMPARATIVELY quiet in the CM 690 II compared to the Define R3.

I have the define R3

i5 2500k medium OC @ 4.5 ghz running prime it maxes out at 55C on the hottest core.

my gtx 460 idles at 24C. ( stock)

All this at 20-21C ambient.

I have the 2 front fans installed (fractals), and 2 GT 1450s ( 1 inside at the bottom and 1 exhausting in the back).

I don't see how it could be any cooler, unless I water cool.

edit: I forgot to mention it's whisper quiet really.

I do understand that it's hard to argue when you have the setup in 2 different cases with up to 15C differences.

** do you have to run the 480 that close to the cpu cooler ?

True that, but that usually only works for people who can afford them as well.
The fact is, most people would prefer to get a better deal.

I was using the Define's stock fans, I wasn't going to splurge on more/better fans on an already really expensive case.

I'm not arguing with anyone, I've tried both cases, and for me, the CM 690 II had much cooler CPU and GPU temps than the Define R3, by a mile.

Just wondering how many fans come with each case 3? You used the stock setup for each case? I know the R3 fans are not great and the sound dampening can raise up temps also. I'm not surprised that the 690 cools better than the R3 with a stock setup but 15 degree is pretty big difference. Not sure about the noise issue. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the R3. I know if it was me I would of replaced the stock fans since their not very good on most cases regardless of who makes the case. Good Luck with CM 690 II

Yeah I used the stock fans on both. Both cases came with 2 fans, 2x 120mm (I haven't got the CM 690 II Advanced.)

Hmmm a shame that as my servers R2 and this XL are so quiet that it'd be possible to know if they are on (espically the XL which is dead silent).

I did have the Original CM 690 before I had my Lian Li prior to this and that was a fantastic case although the Cable management wasn't as good as the II's is. Do agree that the case is fantastic value.

My point's that without a 480, things would be much more comfortable w/ regard to noise and temps.

Sure the 690 cools better, it's designed for maximum air flow. A very hot video card in a case designed for silence w/ heat increasing insulation will always be hotter. In the case of the 480, that means faster fan rpm's and more noise.

For your needs, the 690 matches up perfectly. If you're up for it, cutting the grills for the rear fans will cut down noise and increase the air floor even more!

I can understand that. My batch of SFLEX' set me back over $100 a few years ago.

I'm looking forward to the ARC Midi w/ it's 140mm fans and crazy good air flow. It's actually wider than my Stacker!
