I haven't had the opportunity to listen to HD598 or 558, but I'd probably get a pair of HD595 and upgrade the cable.

If you are fine with voiding your warranty I would just grad the 558s and mod them to the 598s.

A good question is, are HD558 $100 better than HD555? On a budget, I get HD555 and mod them to HD595. You can find them online for 90 shipped. There is a persistent rumor that all of these headphones use the same drivers (HD555, HD558, etc). Only construction is different.

Thats correct, they use the same drivers. However, there are some other differences in their construction.

I see in your signature that you use Sennheiser HD595 and uDAC-2. Do your headphones sound noticeably better through uDAC compared to something like Realtek HD audio found on many motherboards and notebooks?

Yes, I hear a definite difference between my onboard sound and the uDac with the 595s. However, when I tested it with my logitech speakers I could still hear a difference but not as much of one.
