External DAC vs sound card: gaming only - Page 2

DAC's are all about sound quality/clarity they don't offer any of the things an internal sound card does, no virtual surround sound, no EQ's etc.... External DAC's are mainly for people that listen to music and care about the quality coming out although that doesn't mean you cant game with them or use them for anything else.

If you care about any of those special effects an internal sound card offers just go with a better sound card.

External DACs can be used for gaming. Some games (granted, there are extremely few) support surround sound on stereo headphones without relying on sound card driver software. For me exists only one game, Urban Terror, and it has support for that ;p Next, if you're using a laptop, an external DAC may be your best option for quality sound..
