Oh good God... -_-

All of the music, movies, and games the people who got these free points will "purchase" using the points are things that will Microsoft will have to pay the respective publishers for. It's not like MS just pulls all of the store content out of its ass, it's created by producers/developers/artists, distributed by publishers and sold through outlets such as Microsoft GFWL/Zune etc.

So yes, in this case, it IS a direct loss to Microsoft excluding their margin obviously if these people decide to "buy" things using these "free" points.

That being said, $1.2M is a drop in the bucket for MS, also that drop in the bucket could go to helping people in Japan...

QFT.
If Bill Gates dropped $1,000 he wouldn't bother picking it up. Why? Because he'd remake that money before he could even pick it up.

On a serious note, I actually find this incredibly interesting because for the longest time the answer to desperate teenagers was always "There's no way to get free microsoft points. Websites and generators are only phishing you".

I find this situation hilarious and morally arousing.

$1.2m is fail?

I got my Vista Ultimate and Office Pro for free, like thousands of other users. That surely cost them much more, and they gave those away to just about everyone who wanted them. This is like.... "oh, whoops... no big deal".
